How I Decided My College Major

Choosing a college major can be a daunting task, not to mention it's usually the first decision you make when you get to college. Many students end up choosing what they called the "experimental" track as their major when they're unsure of what they want to study. These are my best tips for choosing a college major:

1. Your goals

Yes, you're young right now but take a look at your role models - what do you love about them? Most of the time, you admire the lives of your role models. Well, a job is a big chunk of a persons life. So, you like someones life? Can you imagine you in that life? What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now? Let's start there.

2. Your talents

What are you naturally good at? Think of something you've been praised and admired for before and make a list of jobs you can have, or even better make, out of your natural talents. These are good to keep in mind because it's very hard to ignore something you're naturally talented at and your life will always push you back to what you're good at because it's a comfort zone.

3. Your dreams

Maybe you're not naturally talented at something you'd like to be good at. Well, college is the right time to start. If you're always thinking how great it would be to sing or build a robot, you can choose a major that will allow you to learn just that. Practice makes perfect and you can walk out of college like the artist or engineer you aspire to be.

4. Your mantra

I saved the best for last because this one is so important to me. What is your mantra, your life's mission or philosophy? A good way to figure this out is to write down all the things that are important to you, things that you simply can not live your life without. As the saying goes, "you stand for something or you fall for nothing." It's important to choose a career that helps you stand for something, especially something you're passionate about.
